How to Plan Time Off Around Public Holidays (Without Wasting Vacation Days)

Most people plan vacation days reactively โ€” picking a week that happens to be free, without checking whether a nearby public holiday could have stretched that same time off further. A small amount of upfront planning can turn the same number of vacation days into meaningfully more consecutive time away.

Step 1: Find which holidays fall on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday

These are the days worth building a plan around. A holiday on a Monday or Friday already gives you a 3-day weekend for free. A holiday on a Tuesday or Thursday is one vacation day away from becoming a 4-day weekend โ€” that's the highest-leverage pattern to look for.

Step 2: Watch for two holidays close together

Some of the best opportunities come from two holidays landing in the same general window with only a few working days between them โ€” sometimes it takes just 2-3 vacation days to bridge an entire stretch into a 9 or 10-day break. This is exactly why it's worth checking a full year at a glance rather than planning holiday-by-holiday as each one approaches.

Step 3: Don't assume the "obvious" long weekend is actually the best one

The most heavily marketed long weekends (typically ones already at 3 days by default) aren't always the highest-leverage opportunities. A quieter Tuesday or Thursday holiday elsewhere in the year, extended with a single vacation day, often produces the same length break with less competition for time-off approval and cheaper travel.

A simple planning routine that actually works

  1. At the start of the year, pull up your country's full holiday list for the year.
  2. Flag every holiday that lands on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday.
  3. For each one, note the exact single day (or two days) that would bridge it into a longer break.
  4. Submit those specific requests early โ€” bridge days near popular holidays get approved on a first-come basis at most workplaces.

We've already done step 1-3 for you: every 2026 country calendar page includes a Best Long Weekends section listing the exact extra day to request for each holiday. Combine it with our free Date Calculator to count exactly how many total days off a given bridge would give you.
